The debate over whether subframe spacers are necessary for lifted Toyota Prius models has raged for years. When lifting a Prius 1.5 inches or taller, axle rubbing becomes a real concern. Some voices in the community have dismissed this as a non-issue, claiming it’s overblown or even a hoax. However, my work on this issue—beginning years before competitors acknowledged it—tells a different story.

My Contributions to the Subframe Spacer Discussion
I first brought attention to the axle rubbing problem caused by lifting a Prius in January 2022, when I introduced my manufactured subframe spacers. For years, I’ve expressed that the axle shouldn’t rub metal, which can put stress on the axle, potentially leading to long-term issues, not to mention stress on other suspension parts. Despite skepticism and criticism from those aligned with competitors, the evidence and demand for a solution have only grown.
When I began lifting my Prius, I was aiming for more ground clearance to take the vehicle on more challenging terrain. My experience lifting the Prius taller and actually using it off the pavement—loaded with close to 1,000 lbs—allowed me to really understand what a Prius needs to travel where 4×4 vehicles go. I pushed the Prius to its limits, attempting to break the suspension intentionally to identify the weakest links. This hands-on approach gave me unparalleled insight into the modifications necessary for reliable performance in extreme conditions.

Competitor’s Contradictory Stance
6/12/2020 UPDATE: This was my first IG REEL on their subframe spacers. —–> https://www.instagram.com/reel/DDsrRlkyJTb/
In my story I called out the design flaw…. but now… they have changed their design….
Recently, my competitor published a blog post dismissing the need for subframe spacers. In their article, titled “Subframe Spacers: Are They Necessary?”, they state that no issues have occurred from axle rubbing. Yet, despite their dismissal, they’ve gone on to manufacture their own subframe spacers.
This raises critical questions:
- Why would they create subframe spacers if axle rubbing isn’t an issue?
- Doesn’t this contradict their public claims that rubbing is harmless?
The truth is clear: they’ve known their product causes axle rubbing all along. It took them three years to acknowledge this issue and develop a solution—a solution I pioneered years earlier. Their recent actions validate what I’ve been saying all along: axle rubbing is a real problem that requires a real fix.
Innovating to Improve the Lifted Prius Experience
As the first to identify and solve this issue, I take pride in my commitment to the Prius community. My subframe spacers were designed not just to address axle rubbing but to ensure the long-term performance and safety of lifted Prius models. While competitors have finally followed my lead, their delay highlights a fundamental difference: I prioritize solving problems for Prius owners, not downplaying them.
If you’re lifting your Prius, don’t ignore the risks of axle rubbing. Trust the solution that’s been tried, tested, and trusted for years.
