If you are building a Prius for camping, overlanding, long-distance travel, or simply creating more usable cargo space, one of the first things you may consider is removing the rear seat and installing a platform in its place.
Prius Rear Seat Replacement Platform: Why Metal Is Better Than Wood for Camping and Overlanding
A lot of people immediately reach for plywood.
I would not.
One of the biggest reasons I wanted a metal Prius rear seat replacement platform instead of a homemade wooden platform is moisture. Vehicles are not houses. The temperature inside a vehicle constantly changes. Condensation develops, windows fog up, wet camping gear gets brought inside, humidity gets trapped, and occasionally water gets inside when doors or the hatch are opened in the rain.
Wood can absorb that moisture.
Once moisture begins getting into untreated or poorly protected wood, you are creating an environment where mold can eventually become a serious problem.
I have personally seen this happen inside a camper van conversion. Wood had been used throughout the interior for different parts of the build. Everything looked fine when it was originally constructed, but after some time, mold began growing on the wood inside the vehicle.
That is something I do not want happening inside a Prius that may be used for camping, sleeping, traveling, or carrying equipment for years.
Why Metal Makes More Sense Inside a Prius
When building something that may remain inside a vehicle long term, you have to think beyond how easy the material is to cut and assemble on the first day.
You also have to think about what happens after hundreds of temperature changes, humid nights, wet equipment, spilled drinks, condensation, and regular use.
That is one of the primary reasons this Prius rear seat replacement platform is made from metal.
Metal does not absorb moisture the way wood can. It also provides a rigid and durable foundation without requiring a bulky wooden frame underneath it.
For a Prius, where every inch of interior room matters, that makes a difference.
A Simple Prius Rear Seat Delete
The installation process is intentionally simple.
The factory rear seat can be removed by taking out four bolts and removing the lower rear seat cushion and the rear seat backs. Once those pieces are out of the vehicle, the metal replacement platform can be installed in their place.
There is no complicated fabrication process and no need to permanently modify the Prius.
The platform is designed around the factory rear seat area and uses the OEM seat bracket positioning to locate itself inside the vehicle.
You simply set the platform into position where the original rear seat assembly was located.
Once installed, it stays there.
It Does Not Slide Around
A cargo or sleeping platform inside a vehicle cannot just be a loose sheet of material sitting on the floor. It needs to remain stable while driving, braking, turning, loading equipment, climbing inside, or sleeping on it.
This platform is designed to remain secure once it is positioned inside the Prius.
The metal construction provides rigidity while the OEM seat bracket locations help position the platform correctly. Once it is in place, it does not slide around or constantly need to be repositioned.
It feels like part of the vehicle rather than something temporarily placed in the back.
More Usable Space for Prius Camping and Overlanding
Removing the rear seat completely changes the way the interior of the Prius can be used.
Instead of the area behind the front seats being dedicated to passengers, that space becomes part of the cargo and sleeping area.
This creates more room for camping equipment, tools, recovery gear, power systems, refrigerators, water storage, luggage, and other equipment.
For anyone sleeping inside the Prius, the rear seat replacement platform also provides a much better foundation for creating a flat sleeping area.
Instead of building around the factory seats, the rear passenger area becomes usable space.
No Permanent Modification Required
Another major advantage is that the conversion does not require drilling holes into the vehicle, cutting interior panels, or welding brackets to the chassis.
The original rear seat can be removed and stored.
If you ever decide that you want rear passenger seating again, the platform can be removed and the factory seat can be reinstalled.
That makes this a practical option for Prius owners who want a dedicated camping or cargo setup without permanently changing the vehicle.
Built for the Prius, Not Just Placed Inside It
There is an important difference between something that happens to fit inside a Prius and something designed specifically around the Prius.
This platform is designed around the factory rear seat area, the OEM seat mounting locations, and the available interior space.
That is why installation can remain simple while the finished platform stays secure.
Remove four bolts, remove the factory rear seat cushions and backs, position the metal platform in the factory seat area, and the Prius now has a strong rear cargo and sleeping platform.
For Prius camping, Prius overlanding, long-distance travel, or anyone who simply wants more usable interior space, replacing the rear seat with a purpose-built metal platform can completely change what the vehicle is capable of carrying and how the interior can be used.
