In the world of automotive enthusiasts, the ability to tweak and enhance vehicle diagnostics is a game-changer. My journey into the customization of an OBD-II system epitomizes the DIY spirit, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with a bit of ingenuity and technical skill.

Using an old PT Performance Tuning OBD-II eOBD scanner as my foundation, I embarked on a project to expand its capabilities beyond standard diagnostics. The scanner, initially designed to plug into the OBD-II port and read data, served as a starting point for something much more ambitious.



To augment this system, I carefully wiretapped into the existing OBD-II port, soldering additional connector points. This modification wasn’t just about adding more dongles; it was about enhancing the depth and breadth of data acquisition. By integrating these new connectors, I enabled the use of an OBD-MX Plus device alongside my original scanner.

But the real innovation lies in what I’ve somewhat concealed behind this setup: a sophisticated board outfitted with an SD card, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth capabilities. This board isn’t just another piece of hardware; it’s a portal to a wealth of data streaming directly from the vehicle’s CAN bus signals.


This setup allows me to capture real-time data transmissions from the vehicle’s various sensors and systems. With the added Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionalities, I can wirelessly monitor the car’s performance metrics on my smartphone or computer, making adjustments and troubleshooting in real-time.

The benefits of this system are multi-fold. Firstly, the dual-device connectivity ensures I can run continuous diagnostics without swapping out tools, saving both time and effort. Secondly, the onboard storage via the SD card allows for data logging over extended periods, which is invaluable for tracking performance changes and identifying potential issues before they become serious.

Moreover, the ability to receive and analyze CAN bus signals offers a deeper insight into the vehicle’s operational nuances that typical scanners might not catch. This comprehensive approach to vehicle diagnostics not only enhances my understanding of my car’s mechanics but also empowers me to make more informed decisions about maintenance and modifications.
